The '76' Plate Release Is Here: 50+ Private Number Plate Ideas to Buy on 1 September

20 August 2026

The new ‘76’ number plate series launches on 1 September 2026. For anyone searching for private number plates UK buyers will love, this is an exciting time of year.

The latest registration change gives new car buyers a fresh age identifier, while the DVLA also makes millions of registration combinations available to search, buy and potentially keep for a future vehicle.

Whether you want a personalised plate for yourself, a memorable present, a funny registration or something smart for a business fleet, the ‘76’ release is worth watching.

What is the ‘76’ number plate release?

The UK’s current registration format uses two letters, two numbers and three letters, such as:

AB76 CDE

The two numbers are the vehicle’s age identifier. Plates issued between March and August use the final two digits of the year. Plates issued between September and February add 50 to the year.

That means:

  • March to August 2026: 26 plates
  • September 2026 to February 2027: 76 plates
  • March to August 2027: 27 plates

The ‘76’ series applies to new vehicles first registered in Great Britain from 1 September 2026 to 28 February 2027.

A 76 registration cannot be used to make an older vehicle appear newer than it is. If you buy a 76 private registration, check the vehicle’s first registration date before assigning it. You can read the official guidance on buying a private number plate and assigning a private registration.

Why do buyers get excited about a new plate release?

A new registration release creates a fresh batch of combinations that can feel more personal and current. Some buyers like having the newest age identifier on a new car, while others search for a registration that represents their name, business, hobby or sense of humour.

The ‘76’ release is also a good reminder that a private reg UK search does not have to mean spending thousands. There are often plenty of cheap private plates available, particularly if you are flexible about the letters before or after the number.

Popular reasons to buy include:

  • Matching initials or a name
  • Celebrating a birthday, anniversary or new car
  • Creating a memorable gift
  • Giving a sports car or classic car extra character
  • Making a work van or fleet easier to recognise
  • Choosing something fun without using an offensive combination
  • Finding a plate that looks clean and modern

How to buy a ‘76’ private number plate

There are three main ways to find and buy a 76 registration.

1. Search DVLA Personalised Registrations

The DVLA releases registration marks for sale through its Personalised Registrations service. You can search for combinations and buy eligible registrations directly.

Not every possible combination will be available. Some marks may already be assigned, held back for auction or removed because they could be offensive or embarrassing.

2. Bid in a DVLA auction

The DVLA also sells selected registrations through online auctions. The next auction is scheduled to run from Wednesday 2 September to Tuesday 8 September 2026. You can view the auction details and register to bid through the official DVLA auction website.

Auction plates are often more desirable combinations, including short marks, memorable numbers and registrations with strong word or name appeal. Set a firm budget before bidding, and remember to account for any fees.

3. Buy through a private number plate dealer

A specialist dealer can search across available stock, suggest alternatives and help with the paperwork. This is useful if you already have an idea but cannot find the exact combination.

Reg Smart can help customers buy number plates UK-wide, source a registration on request and provide printed plates. We also buy and sell registrations in Gibraltar, although the DVLA’s ‘76’ release is specifically a Great Britain registration series. Gibraltar plates follow their own requirements, so ask for advice if your vehicle is registered there.

Once you have bought a registration, you should receive the correct certificate of entitlement, such as a V750 or V778, depending on how the registration is held. You must also use a registered number plate supplier when having physical plates made.

More than 500 combinations have been suppressed

The DVLA reviews new combinations before release. This includes checking how they may look or sound when read aloud, backwards, phonetically and in different contexts.

For the 2026 ‘76’ release, reports indicate that more than 500 combinations have been withheld because they could be considered offensive, embarrassing or in poor taste. These may include swear words, explicit references, slurs and sensitive references to crime or violence.

That does not mean every funny or cheeky plate is banned. It does mean buyers should check the official status of a registration before getting too attached to an idea.

Also remember that platespeak is not a licence to alter a number plate. You must display the correct characters, spacing, font and markings. Do not move characters together, use non-standard fonts or cover part of a plate to make it spell something different. Check the official number plate display rules before ordering printed plates.

Are ‘76’ plates good for gifts?

Yes. A private registration can make a memorable gift for a new driver, a partner, parent, colleague or business owner. You do not always need to assign the registration straight away. It can be held until the recipient has a suitable vehicle, subject to the DVLA’s rules and certificate requirements.

For a lower-cost present, you could buy the registration and arrange printed plates separately. For a more complete gift, include help with the transfer and fitting process.
