How much is my number plate worth?

Reg Smart offers a free, no-obligation valuation. Send us the registration and we'll tell you what it's realistically likely to fetch, based on comparable sales and current demand.

How do I sell my private number plate?

Send us the registration for a free valuation, agree a price, and we handle the paperwork, buyer matching and the transfer. You keep the plate until the transfer is complete.

How do I transfer a private number plate onto my vehicle?

Once you own the registration (via a V750 certificate or V778 retention document), we help you assign it to your vehicle. The plate goes on your car and your old registration is released.

Can I put a private number plate on any car?

Almost any vehicle, with one important rule: you can't use a registration that makes your car look newer than it is. So a plate from a newer year can't go on an older car.

What is a V750 certificate?

The document proving you own a registration that isn't currently on a vehicle. It's the certificate you'll transfer from when you assign the plate.

What is a V778?

The retention document. It means you've kept the right to a registration for later use rather than putting it on a car straight away.

What is a dateless number plate?

A registration with no year identifier, such as ABC 123 or 1 ABC. They suit any vehicle age and tend to hold their value well.

What's the difference between prefix, suffix and current-style plates?

Prefix plates (e.g. A123 ABC) carry a letter for the year, suffix plates (e.g. ABC 123A) carry a trailing year letter, and current-style plates (e.g. AB12 CDE) are the format used since 2001.

Can I buy a number plate as a gift?

Yes. Plates make popular birthday, wedding and Christmas gifts, and we can arrange the transfer so the plate is ready for the recipient.

Do you print number plates?

Yes. We supply road-legal replacement plates, including 3D gel and 4D acrylic finishes, printed to British Standard. You'll need to provide your V5C or equivalent proof of entitlement.

Are your printed plates road legal?

Yes, when fitted correctly with the required font, spacing and British Standard markings, and used with a genuine registration. We can advise on the rules.

Can I put a private plate on a lease or company car?

Often yes, but you need the lease company's or fleet manager's permission, and the plate usually must be removed again at the end of the agreement. We can talk you through it.

How long does a transfer take?

It varies, but assignments are usually completed within a couple of weeks once the paperwork is with the licensing authority. We keep you updated at each step.

Do you sell Gibraltar registrations?

Yes. Alongside UK plates, we buy and sell Gibraltar (GBZ) registrations, which are popular for their distinctive look.

Buying directly vs buying through a specialist — what's the difference?

Buying directly means choosing from the stock the licensing authority currently has available. Buying through a specialist like Reg Smart means we can source specific combinations, handle the whole transfer for you, and find plates that private owners are giving up — often ones that aren't available elsewhere.

What happens if I sell my car?

You can either leave the plate on the car (and it goes with the vehicle), or retain it so you keep the right to use it again. We can help you decide and handle either route.

Rules and processes can change, so fact-check any decision against the most recent guidance on the relevant Government website: DVLA/GOV.UK for the UK and DVLD/gov.gi for Gibraltar.

Reg Smart is an independent retailer and is not affiliated with the DVLA or the DVLD.
